The Happy Marriage of Goals and Dreams with Discipline and Accountability

Most of us believe we can be something we have not yet become.

That the “you inside” has not come to the surface yet. But the “you outside” is the guy or gal doing the activities to get you there. If those activities are not happening, there is internal conflict. Your actions are saying one thing but your potential is elsewhere. You say, “I know I can really be something!” as you grab another handful of chips and change channels or check out your latest Zynga farm/city/kingdom/etc. on Facebook.

(Yes, I see you out there in Facebook land)

If new business partners do not start doing the things they need to do quickly when they first start their business, they will start to feel guilty. Things will start nagging at them, and they’ll start to give up. Why? Because our brain says something our body’s not doing.

As leaders, we need to get each new business partner on a simple, manageable, but disciplined course right away. We need to get our teams into a “Daily Method of Operation.” We need to help them shut off the distractions and start going where their goals and dreams are. We need to help them marry their goals and dreams with activity.

The Wolf Parable

Wolf ParableHere’s a tale that’s often shared in addiction recovery, but it applies to anyone who is changing and growing.

An old Apache was teaching his grandchildren lessons of life. He said, “A fight is going on inside of me; it is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, competition, superiority, and ego.”

“The other wolf stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.”

“This same fight is going on inside you and inside every other person too.”

3 Ways to Tell When You’re Using “SALES TALK” and Turning People Off

Sales ManMost leaders have to admit that at some point they have lost a sale or two or have missed out on gaining a new business partner because they talked too much or because they said the wrong thing. It’s easy to do.

Here’s some advice from one of the world’s largest ad agencies, Young & Rubicam (Y&R). Chairman Ann Fudge, whose clients include Ford Motor, Sears, AT&T and other giants, said: “You always have to put yourself in the shoes of the consumer. It’s not what we think; it’s what the consumer thinks.”

So how do you put yourself in the consumer’s shoes when you happen to be the seller? It’s not as easy as it seems. Ask yourself, can you recognize a slight change in language or mood when a friend starts talking sales? Do you tend to move toward or away from them?

That’s right. When someone starts talking like a seller, most of us stop listening. Why? Because they all tend to talk the same way.

Seller talk is a little like baby talk… it’s easy to recognize. You know how it sounds…”So, Lucy, what do you do?” She gushes: “I’m a distributor for XYZ products/services. We market blah, blah, blah…”
